It seems that after a few months of uncertainties with filtered photos in between, the unknowns about the new sports bike that KTM has prepared for 2022 are cleared up. This machine, intended for customers with an A2 license, has a very marked heritage from its competition motorcycles that will delight those who love MotoGP.
We talk about the KTM RC 390 2022, It will arrive in dealerships in March of next year completely renewed with a new aesthetic, an improved cycle part and an engine fully adapted to Euro 5 with 44 HP of power. To this must be added a considerable weight reduction and a lot of technology such as its new TFT screen with connectivity via app.
New lightweight chassis
The new KTM RC 390 2022 draws attention at first glance for many factors. The first thing that stands out are your new colors. Using the color range that has always characterized the Austrian brand (orange and blue), they have varied in different shades and combinations creating a unique palette. The colors with which you can choose this model vary between orange-blue or full orange MotoGP style.
But the aesthetic has not only focused on its colors. It has also abandoned the double headlight on its front to go on to use one with simple optics with Full-LED technology which has allowed him to improve top speed. This is due to the use of a computational fluid dynamics design similar to that used by some F1 teams.
This new way of designing the product has corrected some faults that have always been blamed on it, such as its protection against the wind or caloric management of your engine. To achieve this last point, it now has a combination of panels that deflect hot air out of the body, keeping elevated temperatures away from the rider.
If we continue with the external analysis, his rear has been completely disarmed and reduced to a minimum. Leaving the subframe in color and causing a feeling of lightness. A lightness that it really has, since its new ultralight multi-tube chassis He has managed to reduce his weight by 1.5 kilograms compared to the previous one.
Another improvement in which special emphasis has been placed has been on its ergonomics. Its central area has been narrowed to allow better fit the knees and its footrests have been advanced a couple of centimeters. This has meant an improvement in its handling and agility in the most twisty areas of the circuits or mountain passes. The fuel tank has also helped to achieve this agility despite having increased its capacity to the 13.7 liters.
In the mechanical section we find a 373 cc single-cylinder engine prepared for Euro 5, cooled by water, with two camshafts and four valves and electronic gasoline injection capable of generate 44 hp of power. In addition, to improve its response to the throttle and offer more torque, KTM has modernized its intake system by providing it with a 40% larger air filter box.
To manage power and not run out of control, the KTM RC 390 receives new engine maps that improve its efficiency and also allow you to implement the semi-automatic Quickshifter +. We cannot forget either that it now includes a new, more efficient exhaust system that has taken its design from the RC16. It has stainless steel manifolds and an aluminum silencer that are very attractive to the eye but more to the ear thanks to its throaty sound.
Its cycle part is another one that has improved the most. Apart from having changed its chassis for an ultralight one as we mentioned before, the suspensions have been renewed with adjustable springs WP. Your front fork now features an adjustable open cartridge WP APEX, with 30 clicks of adjustments for compression on the left leg and 30 clicks for extension on the right. At the rear, it is equipped with a WP APEX monoshock adjustable in rebound and preload.
But without a doubt where it has improved the most has been in the design of its wheels. Thanks to its new construction in which it abandons spokes and lightens the rim, its weight has been lowered by 3.4 kg compared to the previous generation. For the brakes, a new ABS system has been chosen that has the Supermoto option and ABS in a corner.
Mechanically we have a 320 mm front brake disc and a 4 pistone Bybre calipers and radial mount, while on the rear it uses a fixed single piston caliper with a size of 230 mm. Thanks to this, the set has reduced the total weight by one kilo.
Electronically, the KTM RC 390 from 2022 makes use of numerous driving assistance systems such as the MTC traction control, ABS in curves or the optional Quickshifter +. In addition, to be informed at all times of the situation of the motorcycle, it has a new color TFT screen that adapts its brightness to the light situation and that is able to connect to the smartphone through the KTM My Ride application.
The new KTM RC 390 2022 will arrive at the dealerships of the Austrian brand in March next year at a price that we still do not know.
