Mobility is changing within large cities thanks to the technology of Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) such as scooters, Segway, electric bicycles … That is why the General Directorate of Traffic has launched a new campaign aimed at them.
This consists of raising awareness all users of this type of vehicle to leave the sidewalks, since as the new General Traffic Regulation says, this type of device can only be used on the road, being prohibited from circulating on interurban roads, crossings, highways, highways or urban tunnels.
The DGT does not want electric scooters to circulate on the sidewalk
The General Directorate of Traffic has launched a new communication campaign with which aims to raise awareness in respect of pedestrian mobility, remembering that the sidewalks are an exclusive space for walking. A new campaign that joins those already seen previously.
Since last January 2, RD 970/2020 came into force, modifying the General Vehicle Regulations and the General Traffic Regulations, two normative texts that were approved by the Council of Ministers on November 10, 2020, the personal mobility vehicles, including scooters, are considered vehicles for all purposes therefore, its drivers are obliged to comply with the traffic regulations, in the same way as other drivers of cars and motorcycles.
This implies, for example, that these vehicles, they cannot circulate on the sidewalks, in addition to being prohibited from driving on interurban roads, crossings, highways, highways or urban tunnels. However, there is still a large part of users who do not respect the norm, sometimes due to simple ignorance, which creates discomfort among citizens and dangerous situations, in some cases causing accidents.
For this reason, the DGT has decided to launch this campaign that, with a friendly and fun tone, seeks to publicize the rule in a clear way. Under the slogan "No pasa", the campaign plays with some questions of general culture of which nothing happens for not knowing the answer, to make it clear later that the bicycle or the scooter "does not pass" on the sidewalk. In this way, it seeks to reduce accidents on sidewalks and pedestrian spaces.
This kind of messages can be seen on buses and urban supports from Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Zaragoza and Malaga, also having radio spots and pieces for digital media and social networks nationwide. In addition, as a complement to all this, a specific surveillance campaign will be carried out by different police officers to control and prevent the movement of VMPs and bicycles on the sidewalks.
Let us remember that the fine that comes with this type of penalty can amount to up to 200 euros. In addition, only one person can ride in personal mobility vehicles, the driver being subject to the same alcohol rates as other drivers. Likewise, they are prohibited from driving with the presence of drugs in the body and using headphones, mobile phones or any other device while driving.
