If you are a fan of the racing world, you will be familiar with competitions that try to find out which is the fastest motorcycle or car to travel a given distance in the shortest possible time in a straight line. These types of races are called drag races and are usually a quarter mile (400 meters) long. An American tradition that is not only practiced in the United States but has followers everywhere. An example of this are the True cousins, a Danish team that competes throughout Europe with its vehicles.
Well, today they are in the news for breaking the record in the quarter mile with his completely electric motorcycle. The Silver Lightning, the name by which its mount is known, has managed to establish a mark in the quarter mile 6.44 seconds with a final speed of 311 km / h. A record that not even the big electric vehicle companies like Tesla or Rimac have ever reached.
Made by hand by themselves
But the most surprising thing about this feat is that it has been a record achieved with his own hands. Well, the team. This is made up of Hans-Henrik Thomsen (pilot) and Glenn Nielsen, the former's cousin and the engineer behind the Silver Lightning. Well, both showed up with their spectacular motorcycle in the drag revival held at the Swedish Mantorp Park circuit to see if the improvements made to his mount could break his own record set in 2020.
And boy did they. It is not surprising when we consider that this bike uses 1,200 horsepower of pure electrical energy to propel itself. But not all were joys that day since the record did not arrive until the last attempt. Before setting it up, Hans-Henrik Thomsen asked Ian King (ten-time European Top Fuel Bike champion) for advice on how to improve the start to set it up. And we don't know what he said but it worked.
In one of those last attempts, the bike already set a time of 6:87, a time that already set a new world record for an electric vehicle of these characteristics. However, it was the last one who raised them to the victorious marks with 6, 74 seconds and 311 km / h of final speed.
Following this record, they also established a new mark for the eighth mile (201 meters) by setting a time of 4.48 seconds and a maximum speed at the end of the straight of 270 km / h for an electric vehicle, but the regulations of the NEDRA (National Electric Drag Racing Association) only allow to record one record per day.
However, the story does not end here. The team itself detected that they had a failure in the race while skidding to the side of the road that prevented them from improving their mark even more. This error caused them a loss, according to their own estimates, of almost two tenths. One fact has only motivated them to surpass themselves by setting a new goal, achieve a time of 6.6 seconds. We do not know if they will succeed or not, what we can assure you is that they will put on a good show.
