The MotoGP World Championship is going to change forever after the tragic deaths of Hugo Millán, Jason Dupasquier and Dean Berta Viñales in recent weeks. The FIM has just announced, coinciding with Misano's free practice, a series of changes to improve racing safety.
The first of these is the age limit. From now on it will not be allowed reach any category of the motorcycle world championship as a minor. The age limit is set at 18 for a rider to be allowed to race, whether in Moto3, Moto2, MotoE or MotoGP. But there is more.
Minimum ages go up in all motorcycle categories
Will be in 2023 when it is definitely forbidden to race in the motorcycle world championship being a minor. The minimum age is increased from 16 to 18, although 2022 is left as a margin so that some agreements that have already been signed can be respected. It is understood that minors who are already inside in 2023 will continue.
However, this does not mean that minors will no longer ride motorcycles. To compete in the CEV, the minimum age is set at 16 yearsTo participate in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, you must be at least 15 years old and to race in the Moto3 national championships you must be at least 14 years old.
A decision to say the least if we take into account that one of the most recent cases, that of Jason Dupasquier, concerns a pilot who was 19 years old. Perhaps it is understood that the death of a person of legal age is more acceptable, but in any case the objective should be to avoid it as well.
For that, the FIM has also approved other measures that promise to change the World Cup forever. Radios come to MotoGP to facilitate the communication of the riders with the walls, the commissars and with other pilots. This will make it easier to alert when there is a pilot lying on the track after a fall.
In 2022 radio communication will begin to be tested in smaller categories of motorcycling with the aim that in 2023 it can already be applied in all categories of the MotoGP World Championship and, also, in Superbikes. It remains to be defined if it will only be used for security or will be suitable for more things.
What's more, the FIM communicates that the airbag will be mandatory for all pilots of all categories already in 2022 and that will continue with the process of research and development of new technologies that can help mitigate the impacts of motorcycles against riders. They are the first steps to prevent the dire list from continuing to grow.
