Toprak Razgatlioglu could be Superbike world champion already this Sunday. The Turkish driver swept the first race in Argentina, benefiting in part from a crash by Scott Redding, the poleman, at the first corner of the race. Without the Ducati in battle, Razgatlioglu was unrivaled.
Jonathan Rea, who debuted a new livery on his Kawasaki, finished second, but very far from Razgatlioglu. Redding in the end was able to climb up to ninth position, while it is his teammate, Michael Ruben Rinaldi, who saves Ducati's honor with the third step of the podium.
Fall for Álvaro Bautista and great comeback for Redding
At the exit Toprak Razgatlioglu managed to put first and the big disaster was for Scott Redding, who crashed on his own at the first turn and lost all of his championship options. A wasted pole, and now Jonathan Rea, with new livery on his Kawasaki, was going for Razgatlioglu.
But the Turk had been the fastest all weekend and he seemed to have more rhythm. He took a second of mattress advantage, the same as Rea over his partner, Alex Lowes, who was third. Behind, Álvaro Bautista's fall and Isaac Viñales' departure from the track. Bad turn for the Spanish.
Axel Bassani was harassing Lowes in the contest for the third rung from the podium, and based on power I managed to overtake him on the straight. Ahead there was no option for Rea, who was already more than two seconds off the hook from Razgatlioglu and also was going to have to start worrying about Bassani, who was coming from behind.
Redding was in full comeback after having lifted the motorcycle. He was already sixteenth, at the gates of points, and his ride aimed to be the most exciting of the rest of the race, because Bassani's recovery with respect to Rea was not happening in any case. Rather Lowes held out podium hopes.
Michael Ruben Rinaldi noticed Andrea Locatelli, stalked Lowes and also had the podium in his sights. In front Michael van der Mark had also been making progress at the expense of a Locatelli that he was losing steam when there was still a lot of race ahead. Redding was already fourteenth.
One lap is what it took Rinaldi in surpassing both Lowes and Bassani, though it was too late to hunt down a Rhea who had escaped for four seconds. Razgatlioglu was also around four seconds ahead of his title rival, while Redding was already preparing to overtake Tito Rabat. The tenth position was possible.
In fact five laps from the end Redding passed Eugene Laverty and put Leon Haslam in the spotlight, the best Honda on the track, which was ninth. Lowes also gave an account of Bassani to regain fourth position, but already a long way from Rinaldi. Tito Rabat finishes eleventh in Argentina.
Victory for Toprak Razgatlioglu that leaves him at the gates of the World Cup. It could be champion already on Sunday's day depending on how the results are given in the two races. Rea finishes second and the podium is completed by Rinaldi. Scott Redding's comeback has only reached as far as ninth.
