Video: The case of Lucas Mahias, a paradigmatic example of why it is necessary to take extreme medical checks before riding a motorcycle

The passage of the World Superbike Championship through the Jerez circuit has left one of those moments that nobody wants to experience. Dean Berta Viñales, a young pilot of only 15 years, lost his life during the first Supersport 300 race, which was held on Saturday, after an unfortunate accident.
In addition to paying tribute to the fallen rider, in the hours and days after the tragic accident much focus has been put on finding a reason for these accidents that have plagued us in recent times. But in Jerez, in a more opaque way, an event occurred that affects a line of investigation: the case of Lucas Mahias.
Mahias was involved in accidents with Sykes and Davies in Barcelona
Mahias is a 32-year-old French rider who, despite his age, is completing his first full season in the Superbike World Championship in 2021. He is not exactly a crazy young man, nor is he an impetuous pilot: in his career through Supersport, Moto2, MotoE and EWC he has been characterized as a very gallant rider.
In the Superbike round of Assen suffered a heavy fall that broke his scaphoid. He was out of competition on the Dutch weekend and also skipped the Most event, but returned to the track in Navarra. Suddenly his results have collapsed, and it is that running with a damaged scaphoid is torture.
The problem is what happened in Barcelona. Mahias, a pilot who, as we say, is usually away from incidents, was involved in two serious accidents: one with Chaz Davies in the Superpole Race and the other with Tom Sykes in the long race on Sunday. They both raised the red flag and ended up with the other pilot in the hospital.
Both Davies and Sykes have skipped the Jerez round and it seems they won't be in Portimao either. In the case of BMW, it was even feared that it was something more serious. Mahias traveled to Jerez to participate in the Spanish round, but after participating in the first training sessions, the surprise has come.
Mahias will not run any more for the remainder of the season. The scaphoid injury prevents you from having full control of your motorcycle, so not only has he skipped the Jerez round and he will skip the one in Portimao, but he will also not appear for Argentina in October or Indonesia in November. The season is over for him.
And the big question is whether, once again, doctors have been too hasty in declaring a newly injured driver fit. What about Davies and Sykes now? What would have happened if either of the two Brits had ended up worse? Rains, it pours. In Moto3, at Misano, Deniz Öncü was allowed to race after a concussion. A recklessness.
