Chaz Davies will stop racing in the World Superbike Championship and will retire from the world of motorcycles at the end of the season. This was announced by the British rider in Jerez, where the series derived bikes will race this weekend, although he will not take part of the start due to injury.
With Davies leaves the eternal runner-up of Jonathan Rea, one of the greatest rivals that the great dominator of Superbikes has had in his lustrous stage. But there is also a rider who is the pure heart of Ducati, since he has been enrolled in Borgo Panigale's project for eight seasons.
Davies intends to return to Argentina to say goodbye to Superbikes
"I mean that this it will be my last season in Superbikes. For me it is a difficult decision, because this world is fantastic, it has given me a lot. But it is the right decision, I have thought about it for a long time, "commented the British rider in the Jerez press room without much ambiguity.
Chaz Davies will not be able to race this round of the Superbikes in Jerez precisely because of a hard crash he suffered last week in Barcelona. It was an accident in which he was involved with Lucas Mahias and that has left him with two broken ribs. Who knows if such a scare has been decisive in making the decision.
"I have had very good times, I have achieved many victories and I can only be grateful to this paddock that has given me moments that I will never forget. I have always been lucky to have a group of fantastic people by my side with whom I have shared a long journey in my career. I will always remember the races of Imola and Misano, where the public has made me feel their support and warmth, "he continued.
And it is that Davies is a key rider in the recent history of Superbikes. He was runner-up in the world in 2015, 2017 and 2018, and, along with Tom Sykes, has been Rea's first great rival in the world championship. In addition, he also raced with Aprilia and BMW, and in both brands he went on to win races. In total there are 32 wins for Davies in Superbikes, 28 of them with Ducati.
What Davies also wanted to make clear is that his retirement does not have immediate effect, but that he intends to run again, although he will not be able to do so in Jerez or Portimao. "I can assure you that my career will not end in a hospital in Barcelona, I will do my best to return to Argentina and finish my stage in Superbikes there ".
After Argentina there will be another round, that of Indonesia, but perhaps the peculiarities of the circuit, which is semi urbanBack off Davies. Without the British and without Tito Rabat, Ducati is going to have to search under the stones to find riders who complete its fleet. At the moment, in Jerez he is replaced by Loris Baz.
