Manuel González, born in 2002, competed on a mini bike since he was five years old. In 2011 he was part of the Cuna de Campeones, where he finished second and then went on to MiniGP. In 2013 he was in the Nacional de 80 and in 2016 he made the leap to the Spanish Moto3 Championship and the Red Bull Rockies Cup, before win the European Talent Cup in 2017.
With this background he reached the Supersport 300 class last year, a season in which he achieved three podiums but no victories. This 2019 the tables have turned. Manu González has been the fastest and the most reliable, surviving in a category where it is very difficult to get out of racing unscathed.
His season has been sensational. Won the first two races, at MotorLand and Assen, and after that he also got the win in one of the two Jerez races. From there, he has managed the advantage very well, without getting into trouble and above all showing a lot of coolness in group races, taking into account that we are talking about a 17-year-old boy.
González has managed to impose himself with sobriety to Ana Carrasco, the champion from last season who has had a very uneven year from the beginning. In fact, the one who prevented González from being champion three weeks ago in Portimao was Scott Deroue, the Dutch driver who will try to at least be runner-up in the world.
In fact Manu González is the third champion in the history of Supersport 300, a category that was launched in 2017. Since then, the three champions have been Spanish. The year of the debut, the final triumph was for Marc García, while a year later, as we say, it was won by the Murcian Ana Carrasco.
