After presenting the new Yamaha YZF-R125 at INTERMOT 2018, the Iwata firm continues its offensive in sports bikes with the renewed and more than expected Yamaha YZF-R3.

This new model is an evolution of which currently competes in the World Supersport 300 Championship and the Japanese firm has wanted to update its model by introducing changes that make it look even more like the Yamaha YZF-R6 and Yamaha YZF-R1, taking advantage of the fact that 2018 is the 20th birthday of the Japanese Superbike.

With the unchanged sporting spirit that at Iwata led Yamaha engineers to create the most radical bike ever conceived two decades ago and which shook the foundations of Superbikes, the Japanese firm remains true to sportbikes with one of the most extensive and attractive ranges among aspirational motorcycles.

The Yamaha YZF-R3 occupies the middle step between the YZF-R125 that do not need a motorcycle license and the YZF-R6, the Supersport. This model is postulated as one of the most exciting among motorcycles for the A2 license, with the permission of the Kawasaki Ninja 400.

Outwardly the changes are easily identifiable. The Yamaha YZF-R3 approximates its lines to those of the brand's great sports cars, although the features are more similar to the YZF-R125 with two large headlights and that large air intake located between them in the style of the YZR-M1 of MotoGP. Yamaha ensures that with the new aerodynamics the YZF-R3 achieves a 8 km / h higher top speed thanks to 7% less resistance against the wind.

The tank area is also new and together with the semi-handlebars placed in a 22 mm lower setting it allows an even more radical driving posture, facilitating attack riding, so it will have lost part of its versatility in a more racing orientation.

The engine is a 321cc parallel twin with four valves per cylinder and liquid cooling. The brand does not announce changes in the propellant, so it maintains its figures of 42 hp at 10,750 rpm and 29.6 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. The truth is that we expected changes in this regard so that the R3 could fight face to face with the Kawasaki Ninja 400, current queen of SSP 300 after the triumph of Ana Carrasco.

Where there are changes is in the cycle part. While the tubular steel chassis has been retained, the conventional front fork has been replaced with a 37mm KYB inverted fork in diameter held by new seatposts to improve the rigidity of the front axle.

The dashboard is also new. The control panel is now fully digital and is inspired by the one used by Iwata Superbikes with a large backlit LCD display with a digital tachometer on the top, speedometer, gear indicator, coolant temperature, fuel level, clock and partial.

The Yamaha YZF-R3 will be available at dealerships starting next month January in two colors (Yamaha Blue or Black Power) at a price yet to be specified.
