The Yamaha XMAX 400 It was renewed in 2017 to vindicate itself as one of the most solvent sports-cut large scooters on the market and at the same time a more reasonable option to the all-powerful Yamaha TMAX 560 that we just recently met at the Milan Motor Show.

After having tested what is possibly the most direct rival on the market, the Kymco Xciting S 400, we have had no choice but to put ourselves at the controls of this XMAX 400 and the truth is that although they are very close concepts, the differences they are remarkable.

Yamaha XMAX 400: maturity made scooter

Outwardly the Yamaha XMAX 400 has a design language very similar to that of the rest of the fingerboard family. Angled lines, short front, elongated middle zone towards the rear and modernity but with sober nuances. This is good because it creates a brand image, but at the risk of being seen too much in a relatively short time. In fact it is almost identical to the XMAX 300.

In any case, the XMAX 400 is a scooter that is pleasing to the eye, its front headlight with triple LED optics has a deep look and the indicators integrated into the bodywork contribute to generate that perception of packing that is replicated behind. The assembly is good and the quality of the paint and plastics is above average.

Placed at your controls, this scooter offers us a well-crafted view. The controls are very well finished, using elements shared with the motorcycle range. The dashboard is large, with a perfectly readable double analog dial that leaves room for a information-packed digital display well ordered and useful, with partials that we will handle from the right fist.

The driving position is very well achieved. The seat is 800 mm from the ground and its width does not allow us to reach quite well with both feet to maneuver while standing; We will have to step forward a bit. There is a lot of longitudinal space to sit, it is comfortable and has a little support in the back.

Following market trends, we have a large central beam between the legs, but it leaves enough space for generous platforms where we can place our feet in multiple positions. The passenger footpegs are foldable.

Engine to spare for a long-range scooter

But what we want to know is How does this Yamaha XMAX 400 move?So we start the engine and the single cylinder comes to life by beating its 395 cubic centimeters with a fairly contained sound, more than that of the Kymco Xciting S 400, but with a little more vibrations that are perceived in the controls and in the rear.

We begin to move comfortably and you can tell that Yamaha knows what it is doing. The touch of the right grip is quite direct with the rear wheel, but at the same time it is dosable and allows us a very intuitive driving.

Between the city streets the XMAX 400 moves with ease and its 210 kg curb weight they are noticeable, although they flow between stopped cars in traffic quite easily. It is easy to move, especially thanks to its narrowness, but it is quite long, touching 2.2 meters in total length and 1,567 mm between axes.

Dynamically, looking for clearer terrain, the steel tube frame behaves in a correct way. It results in a very stable scooter, that treads reliably and that is not lazy when entering the curves, having a precise and consistent steering. The 15-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels don't seem small dynamically.

The suspensions also play a decisive role in its behavior and although both the conventional front fork and the double rear shock absorber do not shine in any point, they do comply in all. The moron is pulling comfortable at the front and somewhat dry at the back.

About the brake system we cannot say much more than that the XMAX 400 is left over. The 267mm double front disc has power and feel, although it sinks the front end more than desired when pressing hard. That is why we will almost make more use of a rear brake with a 267 mm disc that was really effective and that will monopolize a good part of the deceleration of the day to day, keeping the whole quite level.

Entering fast zones (for a scooter) was where perhaps we expected to find more differences with respect to the Kymco Xciting S 400, but the truth is that we would finally have to give a result of a technical draw, and we are going to stop a bit to explain it.

With 32, 8 CV and 36 Nm of torque, the XMAX 400 is somewhat less powerful (-3 CV and -2, 4 Nm) than the Kymco, but curiously the second it has is more kick at low speed, apart from 3 kg more weight in running order. Instead it gave us the feeling that the Yamaha is more subtle underneath but in return it stretches and recovers with more ease. And it is that the XMAX 400 runs with energy.

Moving on the highway, the engine of the Yamaha XMAX 400 boasts a well tuned engine that it seems that it will not run as much as it really does, maintaining high cruising speeds without messing up the slightest. Yes we have to point out that it goes a lot, but not as much as the dashboard tells us, in which we detect a deviation in the speedometer above the usual.

It is a scooter that is not rough but hits hard, so it never hurts to have it. traction control fitted as standard, to have a bodyguard if at some point the grip is not optimal. We only saw him jump on the smooth floor of a parking lot.

High load capacity and very well distributed

Under the seat we find one of the strengths of this Yamaha XMAX 400. If on the outside it looks like a scooter of fairly contained dimensions, once we uncover the seat they give us a gift from Iwata one of the best capacities with space for two full face helmets and a little more of room to spare. The shapes are very regular and it also features LED interior lighting.

And is that practicality is one of the strengths of this scooter, because also in the front we have two large glove compartments regular shapes and wide opening (one with lock and one without). The keyless start It is also another great ally of the XMAX 400, making it very comfortable to use and using the contact control to open all the locks and the steering lock.

The price of the Yamaha XMAX is 6,799 euros, a price that is not cheap for a scooter but it seems quite successful if we compare it with the 7,399 euros of the Suzuki Burgman 400 or the 6,399 of what should be its direct rival, the Kymco Xciting S 400.

Regarding consumption, we also have to recognize that Iwata have done a good job because they have achieved a large scooter that, without being light or especially austere, does achieve good autonomy thanks to a consumption that gave us a figure of 4.2 liters per 100 km for a 13 liter tank.

In short, the Yamaha XMAX 400 is the triumph of reason with a mature and well-planned product. It is true that perhaps for an average user it is not necessary as much motor and the XMAX 300 is lighter and cheaper, but this extra power does not feel bad at all. for anyone looking for a solvent scooter in open terrain.

Well finished, with good capacity, comfortable and decisive, the XMAX 400 is on the market because the public demands it, and Yamaha's response is as successful as a scooter that can do practically the same as the award-winning TMAX, but for almost the half price.
