Scooters are an increasingly popular option to move around the city, but at the same time cities are changing their morphology, forcing many to have to make longer trips than the merely urban.

In this sector of the market it is precisely where Kymco wants to become strong, first with the launch of the Kymco AK 550 and more recently with the premiere of another of its flagships: the Kymco Xciting S 400 which has just been thoroughly renovated.

Launching the maxi scooter segment right now more than a decade, the first Kymco Xciting tried to set the trend for where maxi scooters should go: powerful engines, large size and certain concessions to sportiness while maintaining a relatively contained price.

The concept of the Xciting has been changing over time, but maintaining the philosophy and now the only representative of this saga remains faithful to a contained displacement so as not to step on the AK 550, but it does take from it some features that they make him a midweight scooter even more interesting in some respects. Because not everything is a question of power.

On the outside, the Kymco Xciting S 400 is a scooter, there is no doubt about that, and it will be a point against those who deny this type of motorcycle, but we cannot deny that the leap forward in terms of aesthetics has been enormous. The Xciting has always stood out for its successful design, and now it is even more so.

The aesthetic has sharpened again. Ahead the double LED headlight With an aggressive look, its angles are replicated throughout the body. It is a pointed design that is very close to the aesthetic language of Japanese brands. At some points we have excess plastic as in the massive cover of the exhaust to make it more graceful and voluminous at the same time.

At the front we find a screen that is adjustable in height manually, while at the rear the rear light is very similar to the one used in the AK 550, integrating the indicators on its sides. In general, it is quite graceful and at first glance it offers a level of finishes at the same level as the AK; a couple of steps ahead of the rest of the Kymco range.

In the dashboard we have an arrangement of three elements: speedometer on the left, monochrome digital display on the right (partials, fuel level, temperature and revolutions) and in the center a color digital dial for the Kymco Noodoe system.

The aesthetics of interface used by Kymco is not as colorful as the rest of the bike, especially on the right screen, with an arrangement that is irregular and somewhat difficult to read. With the Noodoe the same thing happens to us, it could be a quite useful tool but you end up not paying too much attention to it due to its confusing handling.

Once we got our butt onto the seat of the Kymco Xciting S 400 we plunged into a scooter quite well tuned at ergonomic level, the truth, at least for someone 170 cm tall. The seat is wide and only its width will make it difficult for us to reach the ground in some situations, but in return it is very comfortable and with lumbar support.

The controls are in a comfortable and relaxed position, there is a lot of room for the feet despite a central column is too wide, there is two lockable glove boxes in the shield and the brake levers have regulation; a nice touch. Where we do continue to demand any modification to the brand is in the rear view mirrors. Once again they are too close to the body, forcing you to look too far away from the race to look through them.

We start and the Xciting S 400's engine comes to life. We twist our right fist and the single-cylinder engine gives us an intense kick from very low revs. The low and medium range of revolutions of this scooter is its strong point, with a punch that in areas of low grip can displace the rear.

Moving between the urban streets is quite easy despite being a scooter of relatively considerable size. It has a 1,570 mm wheelbase and a 213 kg curb weight: 10 mm and 17 kg less than an AK 550, to get an idea. It is playful with a certain tendency to fall inwards from a certain incline, perhaps due to its somewhat high center of gravity.

Going out into open spaces the 400cc engine begins to deploy its arsenal. With 35.5 hp and 38.4 Nm of torque, the recovery at medium speed is powerful, but it loses intensity as the revolutions go up, and it is the most powerful of its class. The stretch is not too intense, which translates into well-calculated overtaking. Still, it's easy to roll the Xciting S 400 at highway cruising speed without the bike being too shaken.

For the frame, it is used once again with a tubular chassis with a double cradle made of steel and a joint swingarm / motor. To this set are added a conventional front fork and a double rear shock absorber with preload adjustment. The operation of both trains is correct shooting both solo and with a passenger.

The setting of the suspensions is pulling comfortable but at the same time it is capable of supporting the whole without unwanted movements. Of course, the rear part is a bit dry when it comes to passing pronounced potholes or bumps; it lacks a bit of progressivity.

In the brakes section, the 280mm diameter front double disc bit by radial anchor pliers; in the rear we have a 240 mm disc. For practical purposes, the rear brake will be our best ally, as there is a bite in the front but there is not too much touch.

Another key point of the Kymco Xciting S 400 is in the gap under the seat. On a scooter of this size, nestled inside the medium / high-displacement maxi-scooters, we take a hole under the seat better resolved. Only the front part of the seat folds down, its interior shapes are irregular, the loading mouth is rectangular and the lower part of the seat fits within the available space.

The result is a chest where we can only keep a full face helmet (and not all), with it located in the middle of the hole, leaving a bare front part and an impractical back part, as it remains under the passenger seat.

Where we do have to recognize the good work done by Kymco is in the tuning of the engine at the consumption and emissions level. The brand has focused on achieving a sparse scooter as far as possible and with 12.5 liters of tank it achieves consumption averages that allow comfortably exceed 250 km before skipping the reservation notice.

Priced at 6,399 euros, the Kymco Xciting S 400 is already in a segment of major words. It is not a cheap scooter, but we cannot classify it as expensive either. Around it are rivals such as the Yamaha XMAX 400 (6,799 euros), the Suzuki Burgman 400 (7,899 euros, 7,399 euros in promotion) or the BMW C 400 GT (from 9,097 euros).

In short, the Kymco Xciting 400 is a large, cozy and solvent scooter that convinces by general behavior and above all by comfort. Instead already It is no longer a much cheaper option than the rest of the competitors and at the same time you can still improve in some practical aspects.
