We tested the Voge 500DS: a very complete trail bike for the A2 license at a demolition price

Motorcycles for the A2 license are a fishing ground to which brands are paying more and more attention. Voge is a new brand in our territory and has set its sights on this segment to launch a new range of motorcycles chaired by the Voge 500DS that we just tested.

Priced very tightly and packed with good arguments, the Voge 500DS is a trail bike for A2 license that the Chinese firm is going to use as a Trojan horse to break into the European market with force, using a good handful of nods to products that we already know.

Voge 500DS: a well-armed trail

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 048

It may not sound like much to you yet, but Loncin He is a giant in the world of motorcycles. The Chinese firm is pure muscle and to give you an idea they are responsible for manufacturing some of BMW's engines such as those of the new BMW F 900 R and F 900 XR. But be careful, because they even competed in the 125cc world championship, becoming the first brand in China to score points in MotoGP.

Now, and after being responsible for motorizing a few motorcycles sold in our market (and in so many others), Loncin is determined to land strongly in Europe, signing an interesting agreement with MV Agusta. In this alliance, the Italian firm will cede the manufacture of its three-cylinder engine to the Asian firm and MV Agusta will receive a range of low / medium displacement produced and manufactured by Loncin but with a Varese design.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 043

But the thing does not stop here, since the landing of Loncin will also be made in its own way, seeking success with complete products that are already for sale within our borders under the name Voge.

For Loncin this launch is really important, because it is not just a motorcycle, but a full range of premium bikes. Or at least what is understood by premium products coming from China, although it must be recognized that the effort to offer an interesting product with a very contained price has been enormous.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 033

The Asian firm has made available to us the new Voge 500DS, a versatile trail bike whose appearance reminds us of a Japanese model with a winged logo on the tank. Its wingspan is greater than that of a conventional small trail and the first impression is quite apparent.

It is a large motorcycle, with a modern appearance and marked lines where the trick of robustness has been played with multiple winks. The front is protected by a steel tube framework, the bottom of the tank has a metallic-look insert and the rear rack with integrated metal handles finishes off a well-protected package.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 042

At the controls the Voge 500DS feels like a well-made bike. The seat is wide and quite comfortable, with good padding, and its 821mm ground clearance with a narrow middle zone they allow us to reach the ground quite easily without the need to juggle.

The driving position is typical of a trail, with a posture that maintains the straight back and a handlebar in a comfortable position for the hands. Ahead we find a completely digital dashboard, full of information and whose initial animation has a very clear Germanic inspiration.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 034

The panel has all the necessary information, including tachometer, speedometer, coolant temperature, consumption, tire pressure, partials, hour clock, gear engaged and battery indicator. In its lower part we have a USB charging port and the screen is adjustable in two positions (although not in operation), so it would only be missing a thermometer for the outside temperature to finish the whole.

Consistent behavior and versatility

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 010

We start the Voge 500DS and it greets us with a pleasant, restrained but energetic snore, coming out of its double-exit exhaust that peeks out from the bottom right and powerfully reminds us of that of the BMW F 900 R.

We engage first and begin to move with ease. The left lever actuates the cable clutch and has a soft touch, with good dosage, so we started to cover the first few meters. The engine feels tame, with a sweet delivery even though it just didn't turn fine rolling very low of laps.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 013

In the city it handles well. Good access to the ground for the feet and a relatively contained weight (although not too much) of 205 kg in running order With a fairly closed angle of rotation they allow us to move with ease. We quickly leave the urban environment and go to more twisty areas with asphalt of all kinds and the 500DS proves to be an interesting bike.

Its engine is a 471 cc parallel twin that offers figures of 43.5 hp and 39.7 Nm of torque. Its operation is what is expected for a motorcycle of this cut, very progressive, dosable and linear. He likes more to turn in the middle than to look for a stretch that ends without too much emotion reaching the cut abruptly.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 030

The transmission development is pulling short, so depending on what type of roads it will force us to play with a change with a game pulling long and a touch that is not entirely accurate. In return, it behaves like a motorcycle that is entertaining because it invites you to play between curves.

The chassis is a steel multitubular that is supported on a set of suspensions signed by KYB with inverted fork in the front and monoshock with linkage in the rear, with travels of 161 and 62 mm respectively. Its behavior is correct and the feel of the suspensions is pulling hard, more than we expected, which is a pleasant surprise when it comes to containing the movements in support.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 020

At the time of anchoring we see that Voge has wanted to equip the 500DS with quality material, resorting to Nissin for a 298 mm front double disc brake set and double piston calipers plus a 220 mm rear disc. The set fulfills its mission with guarantees, although the handle is somewhat hard. As a security measure, it has the mandatory ABS, in this case signed by Bosch, whose operation is not intrusive.

On highway sections, the Voge 500DS takes advantage of its large size, especially at the front, to offer a good aerodynamic protection. The chest is well protected and there is no great turbulence with the screen in the lower position.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 029

To raise the screen you will have to stop, unscrew the knob at the front, raise the screen and screw it back in to secure the position. A somewhat cumbersome task.

What is perceptible both when stopped and on the highway is that a quite high level of vibrations. Although the running boards have rubber, it is easy to see that the engine is not as round as it should be. The mirrors and handlebar grips also transmit the engine beat clearly.

Because good equipment does not have to be at odds with a high price

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 011

Contextualizing within its segment, the Voge 500DS arrives to battle it out against 500cc twin-cylinder trail rivals such as the Benelli TRK 502 (5,999 euros) or the Honda CB500X (6,750 euros). In both cases, La Voge's argument is clear, offering a more affordable price than its rivals with a fairly similar proposal: 5,595 euros.

Now, it must also be recognized that Voge is trying hard to become known as a premium brand but this effort does not translate into a perception of premium quality. The finishes, materials or the touch of some components are not what we would expect from a motorcycle covered by the premium label.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 052

In any case, the Voge 500DS is a very good option for any user who has just obtained an A2 license, who wants to have a motorcycle for a while and does not want to give up an attractive design and more than reasonable equipment. Especially considering that for a price content offers a high dose of arguments.

TFT box, Bluetooth connectivity, dynamic turn signals, standard Pirelli tires, top brand material in brakes, suspensions and ABS and a solvent two-cylinder engine close a proposal that with the Voge 500DS it is difficult not to take into account when looking for alternatives for a recommendation.

Voge 500R: same recipe in naked version

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 017

In addition to the trail version we were also able to briefly test the Voge 500R, the naked version of the same bike that is already on sale in Spain. In this case we are talking about a first cousin, since they share an engine, cycle part and components, changing only the control panel, the driving position and the aesthetics.

When we get on it, we perceive it as a much more compact motorcycle, just as narrow but without all the extra volume added on the trail between bodywork and protections. its wingspan is more contained and it is appreciated when it comes to using something more sporty.

Voge 500ds 2020 Test 015

The suspensions are shorter and feel firmer, a more consistent overall feel that is favored by a flatter, lower handlebar with closed ends that invites us to attack the curves with more energy. The truth is that in twisty sections the Voge 500R gave us a corner session in which we had a good time.

As on the trail, there are noticeable vibrations, but the engine has another character. Yes, the numbers are exactly the same (43.5 hp and 39.7 Nm), but the difference in weight is noticeable with almost 10 kg less in favor of the naked, and that allows the thruster to turn with a little more joy.

In the case of the Voge 500R, it must be borne in mind that it is at odds in a much more competitive segment. The naked two-cylinder medium displacement are an overcrowded niche in which the Honda CB500F (6,250 euros), Kawasaki Z 650 (6,599 euros), Benelli 502C (6,299 euros) or with less displacement, the Yamaha MT-03 (5,449 euros) stand out.. The price of the Voge is groundbreaking: 4,495 euros.
