Not only is it more powerful and Euro5 compliant, it is also better equipped than ever and its finishes have taken a step forward again. The result is a scooter that, although little known in our market, has good performance and which we could include without complexes within the premium segment.

For the first time in history The Peugeot lion has been shown in motion. It has not been a coincidence that they have given life to the logo of the brand, and it is because Peugeot Motorcycles is gaining more and more importance for the French conglomerate. So much so that the involvement has been closer than ever between the car brand and the motorcycle division.

The design centers of both brands have worked hand in hand to renovate what is now the third generation of the Metropolis. A lion with three wheels that has more than enough arguments to convince everyone who is considering changing saddle.

And it is that this new normal is bringing substantial changes in mobility. On the one hand, the return of workers to their jobs is being done with less use of public transport; on the other hand, not everyone can drive to work. The result is a rebound in 125cc motorcycles and mopeds to carry with the car license, but also with the three wheel scooter.

Scooters approved as tricycles are establishing themselves in the market, and Peugeot continues to trust that its Metropolis is a totally valid alternative. That is why French designers and engineers have given a a new twist on the concept born in 2013 as an alternative to the Piaggio MP3.

Thus, at a first glance, we can see an evolution of the Peugeot Metropolis, with a more aggressive and robust design that simulates the powerful profile of a lion and its mane. The lines are sharper than ever, but above all the similarities to the latest Peugeot cars are striking.

At the front, the headlamps now include LED daytime running lights with a vertical arrangement, simulating the lion fangs. Meanwhile in the rear are the pilots with position lights simulating a claw on each side reminds us of the design that was released in 2016 with the Peugeot 3008 and 5008.

The changes included in this new generation are not only aesthetic, as could be the chrome-look elements on the outside to give it that sophisticated touch. There are also modifications in the cycle part such as the tires, which in the double front axle are now 13 inches and they are combined in two colors.

The truth is that aesthetically the Peugeot Metropolis is quite attractive, even more so in that powerful blue color that is very difficult to capture its real tonality in photos but that suits you really well.

We went from the aesthetic to the practical, and we got on the back of the new Metropolis 400 to see that the renovation has been very, very deep. The driving position stands out for two factors: the first of them is the control unit with two analog dials and a new TFT digital display in between five inches.

Among the options offered to us, the i-Connect It allows us to connect a smartphone via Bluetooth with which to manage incoming calls, partially view messages or show us the GPS indications if we mark a route through the brand's application.

The screen itself does not have a high resolution or has particularly vivid colors, but it is quite showy with animations similar to those used in the firm's cars and gives us a good amount of additional information. It is true that some indicators such as the hour clock or the external thermometer are shown with excessively small numbers.

Another of the great details that has caught our attention (and for the better) of the Peugeot Metropolis is that it is the only three-wheeled scooter on the market that has flat ground. This detail with less and less presence in the market is very comfortable when it comes to getting on and off, it expands the cargo space and offers us a lot of horizontal space, although longitudinally those with slightly large feet will be somewhat boxed in.

Speaking of cargo space, the Peugeot Metropolis 400 is well served, although without excesses. Behind the shield we have a generous glove compartment while under the seat the hole will allow us to store many objects, but not a helmet. The space for the helmet is reserved for the trunk, which opens independently and accommodates a full face helmet. Fair, but it fits.

The opening of all closures is electronic And it is done centrally from the buttons that are under the handlebar. None of the drawers have opening dampers, but they do lock; firmly the trunk and not so much the seat.

Once equipped, we started the Peugeot Metropolis 400 and the truth is that to be a Euro5 It gives us a fairly intense sound and some vibrations. The lion is noticed when he wakes up while we climb on his back.

The seat of the Metropolis 400 is located at Height 780 mm, only 15 mm less than in the Yamaha Tricity 300, but we reach the ground much more easily thanks to the fact that it is a more restrained seat, especially on its sides. In return, its cushion is harder and there is less longitudinal space.

The driving position is generally good thanks to the flat ground and its own limitations: leaving the knees almost at 90ยบ and without the possibility of stretching the legs. A nice touch is that the screen is adjustable in height without tools. Adjustment is done from the front, by pressing on the two buttons on the screen supports, so it must be done while standing still and getting off the motorcycle.

We unlock the suspension system And, yes, the Metropolis feels like a motorcycle, as it lets itself swing swinging from one side to the other. We release the parking brake (hidden in the handlebar in the piece under the brand's logo) and turn the gas to start driving.

We do the first few meters carefully, since a brief adaptation process is always necessary in these cases, but the naturalness of the Metropolis 400 is commendable. Anyone who has driven a motorcycle or moped will quickly get along with this scooter.

Yes it is true that the touch of the address is not so natural. There is a certain resistance to the inclination when strolling around and moving between cars in urban environments, leaving a somewhat heavy behavior to which we have to get used to and forcing us to do a little more force than necessary on the handlebars. A Tricity 300 feels much lighter in this regard.

Both in the city and driving towards more open terrain, it is easy to notice that the engine has muscle. This lion is equipped with a self-developed, water-cooled 399-cubic-centimeter single-cylinder engine. Peugeot Motorcycles has conceived this new engine in accordance with the Euro5 regulations, and even so it can still boast of being the most powerful in the category, with 36 hp and 38.1 Nm of torque.

These figures translated into practice leave us with a scooter that weighs a lot with 271 kg dry on the scale (239 kg for a Tricity 300), but in return it is a motor that shows its teeth. At startup it appears to be slow, but only until it breaks its resting state.

Both in recoveries and in maximum speed it leaves us with a very good taste in the mouth. Accelerating hard out of corners and finding the response we hope for is just as satisfying as its ability to overtake on conventional roads. Has hit to spare. Good for Peugeot.

Compared to the Piaggio MP3 with which it shares greater similarity in terms of motorization, weight and dimensions, the Peugeot Metropolis 400 has seemed to us to have a better response. The motor is linear but powerful and it is capable of maintaining high cruising speeds without messing up.

The behavior of the chassis and suspensions (front monoshock and rear double shock absorber with travels of 150 and 80 mm respectively) has many highlights and some shadows. Once we break that laziness of the direction we mentioned earlier, the frame offers a predictable and neutral touch, with a very high stability dose.

Driving the Metropolis on twisty curvy roads we look for limits and the truth is that they are not easy to find for a normal user. You can lie down a lot and in a very safe way, because the front end does not stop, nor does it rub anything with the asphalt easily.

Within the trajectory the Metropolis 400 is really stable, in large part also as a consequence of a set of suspensions that has a rather hard setting in both the front and rear axles; drier than comfortable. For this same reason, bumps inside the curve cause certain bounces. An extra point of progressivity would not be bad.

Regarding the braking section, the Peugeot Metropolis has a double disc on the front axle with 230 mm diameter and a third disc on the rear axle of 240 mm. In addition to an anti-blockage system, the Metropolis is equipped with a combined braking system.

On the asphalt this tricycle takes advantage of the two wheels on the front axle to allow us to brake very hard and well inside the curve. We would lack a point of effectiveness both when braking with the right lever and with the left, we assume that derived from the high weight of the set. It is effective, although not all that it could be.

It also includes emergency signaling when detecting strong braking, activating the indicators automatically. In this case the brake pedal is well integrated and we hardly have any space left, although its performance is not entirely comfortable as it is very close to the rear of the shield.

And now we are going to answer a basic question: if it has three wheels and it can stand on its own vertically, can you fall? Well yes, you can fall. Operating like a motorcycle, the Metropolis leans and despite having a double wheel in front there is a maximum lean that should not be exceeded to guarantee grip.

What you do have to take into account is something that we have already seen that happens in other models. When we reach a traffic light we can activate the front suspension lock and avoid lowering our feet to the ground. However, its deactivation is carried out automatically when we operate the accelerator again, and it also does it immediately. You have to come out decisively from the first moment and with a very vertical position. Hesitating with the right fist, starting very slowly or without being well vertical can translate into an emergency ground foot.

The truth is that it must be recognized that the Peugeot Metroposlis 400 is a very interesting option for someone who comes from the world of cars and is looking for a vehicle with the performance and agility of an average scooter but does not have a motorcycle license.

The level of the finishes is really good, as well as the benefits and its technological equipment. Two trim levels are available: Active with 5-inch digital display, 12V connection, adjustable backrest and a single body color or Allure, with all the benefits of equipment such as USB connection, i-Connect, keyless start or upholstered cargo spaces.

The prices of the Peugeot Metropolis 400 are 8,799 euros for the Active finish and 9,399 euros for the Allure. That is, it is a scooter between 800 and 1,400 euros more expensive than the Yamaha Tricity 300 (7,999 euros), and also above the 7,822 euros of the Piaggio MP3 350 and 8,499 euros of the Piaggio MP3 500 HPE Business, the two most affordable options from the Italian manufacturer.
