It's only been two years and the Ducati Multistrada 950 S it has already been renovated. The younger sister of the Multistrada family prides itself on being the most multi of all the Multis, it renounces the war for power to offer a truly complete asphalt-cut trail bike.
Well equipped as standard and with one of the best packages in the new version Multistrada 950 S, this tireless touring machine offers its owners all the Borgo Panigale technology, very good finishes, great mechanical behavior and a 113 hp and 96 Nm engine.
Ducati Multistrada 950 2019: the smallest, the most Multi
It was a long time coming, but it was only a matter of time. Knowing that the Multistrada range is the best-selling globally Ducati (in Spain the Monster family is slightly ahead in a technical tie), it was to be expected that the concept born back in 2010 with the first of the modern Multistradas would spread in a segment lower than that of the maxitrail.
Thus, in 2017 the first Ducati Multistrada 950 arrived, taking the fundamental premises of its older sisters and using a more contained, less extreme and ultimately more usable engine for ordinary mortals. Now, two years after his birth comes the first renewal And it does so by introducing slight aesthetic changes, some new components and, above all, a new S variant.
The exterior changes on this new Multi model are not particularly intense, but they are relevant. The easiest way to differentiate it from the 2017 version is by looking at the body side panels where the fairing released by the 1260 family last year is embraced, more elegant and sober. Also new is the flask-shaped silencer.
Apart from these modifications there are others that can go even more unnoticed. The rims are new too and lighter (-0.5 kg) like the aluminum rear swingarm (-0.5 kg too), the clutch becomes hydraulically actuated with Brembo radial pump and automatic cancellation indicators and start-up assistant are introduced pending as standard.
The version that we have been able to test has been the Ducati Multistrada 950 S, the model that will capture the highest percentage of sales and the one that, of course, has a more complete and exotic equipment, basically focused on the digital section.
If we ignore the logos, the Multistrada 950 S is identical to the normal version except for the headlight that becomes full LED technology with curve lighting function. The dashboard is fully digital, a full color 5-inch TFT identical to that of its older sisters. Reading is perfect in any light condition and we can only put one but: it scratches easily.
Through this table you can access all the possibilities that this new model implements. The main thing is that the model has been added to the standard equipment inertial measurement platform IMU, and with it an arsenal made up of electronic suspensions, driving modes, ABS with three-level curve assistance, eight-position traction control or two-way semi-automatic transmission.
Other minor technological changes but that also add to make life a little more pleasant at their controls are the cruise control, the backlit pineapples or the keyless start.
113 hp and 96 Nm of perfect balance
At the controls of the new Multistrada 950 there are some differentiating elements that make it a really livable motorcycle. The seat is wide and comfortable, the aerodynamic protection is good but not excellent thanks to the side fairing, the hand guards and the adjustable screen (manually) and the seat is not excessively high as it is located 840 mm from the ground, although with less than 1.70 meters you only reach the ground simultaneously with the tips of both feet.
The driving position is quite natural, with a lot of room to position yourself, with the footpegs placed in a low position that allows us not to accuse the passage of kilometers and a wide handlebar located in the ideal place to leave the bike. fully vertical back.
We finally start the engine of the Multistrada 950 and its characteristic purr greets us as the digital screen wakes up. Its sound is pleasant, very round, as usual in vee twins at 90º, and the touch of the clutch is soft. We engage first and the gearbox presents us once again with some short, precise and somewhat tough tours that very from time to time they leave us a false dead point if we do not press well.
The engine is becoming an old acquaintance in the Ducati mid-range. In Borgo Panigale they have found a propeller that is as suitable for a sport bike as it is for a trail bike through a funbike, and so this Testastretta 11th moves the SuperSport, Hypermotard and, again, the smallest of the Multistrada family.
With 937 cubic centimeters as in the rest of its range relatives, the Multistrada 950 is capable of developing a power of 113 hp and 96 Nm of torque. In a world where if figures close to 200 hp are not reached, everything seems little, the Multistrada 950 is shown as one of the most balanced and reasonable motorcycles for conventional use.
The 90º vee twin engine is extremely usable thanks to a torque delivery that offers between 3,500 and 9,500 revolutions. more than 80% available, conferring an ability to roll almost in any gear on any road at any pace.
Yes it is true that by dropping the engine a lot of turns below its optimal zone we find some harshness of reactions, although this only happens when we look for the fault in an exaggerated way. The rest of the time it behaves with solvency, sweet in Touring and Urban modes but forceful when we seek a more animated driving in Sport mode.
After more than 300 kilometers of route behind us, we traveled all types of roads: from remote sections with first-speed hairpins or areas with broken asphalt to wide linked curves and highway sections. At no time do we miss more power and it is that its 113 CV spread a lot. At the end of the day we are talking about an engine of almost one liter.
Accompanying the propellant the electronics House brand shines again. Possibly the development carried out by Borgo Panigale engineers is one of the best results offered on the market together with that used by KTM. The driving modes (Enduro, Urban, Touring and Sport) act on the response of the accelerator, the maximum power, the intrusion of the ABS and traction control and the settings of the suspensions.
Everything works, but without noticing hardly any notable changes, and when something works it should be done without being noticed. Once we have selected the mode we want, the Multistrada 950 behaves with different characters, being very conservative in Urban mode and much more permissive in Sport. The forcefulness of the engine in this mode is direct and forceful, forcing the traction control to enter only when the asphalt is highly polished. The ABS for its part is not intrusive and allows more joys of which we might initially think, and when he acts, he does so smoothly.
The suspensions and brakes deserve a special mention. Both sections separately work very well, but together they shine, and we explain it. The complete Brembo kit includes 320mm front discs bitten by radial grippers M4.32 monobloc with four pistons and commanded by a radial pump also. Its touch is really good, dosable and with a bite.
As if this stuff wasn't good enough on its own, the introduction of the IMU inertial measurement platform gives the 950 ABS with anti-lock function when cornering and, in addition, it is complemented by a new combined braking system that makes decelerations even more effective.
On the other hand, the analog material of the normal version with 48 mm inverted fork and rear monoshock, both fully adjustable, are replaced on the Multistrada 950 S by electronic equipment. The Ducati Skyhook System used for the first time in the 2012 Multistrada 1200 now reaches the mid-range, and does so with the same smooth, effective and intelligent operation that is able to detect the type of driving regardless of the chosen mode to maintain stability in a way impeccable.
With all this arsenal, the Ducati Multistrada 950 S is a perfect balance between day-to-day usability, travel comfort and excitement in cornering sections where we want to accelerate the pace. The combination of the braking system with the electronic suspensions allows brake too hard and too late at the same time that the bike heads decisively into the curve.
The confidence provided by the system gives the mini-Multi an unknown plus in its category and thanks to the stability of the steel multi-tube chassis it is possible to fully enjoy connecting sections of curves.
It is relatively agile in tight sections although it feels somewhat heavy (227 kg for the Multistrada 950 and 230 kg for the S) and at the same time maintains an immovable stability in fast corners. The only point that maybe we would improve is to replace the 19-inch front rim with a 17-inch one, although the truth is that with the large size it is really good.
An effective and reasonable trail
One point that should be improved, especially for those of us who would like to be a little taller to enter the average are the mirrors. The mirrors are large and have very good visibility, but we were unable to adjust them so as not to have a nice view of the sky. They have very little vertical regulation and to get visibility we have to get very close to the handlebar.
Another element that could be improved could be the position of the passenger footpegs. The seat is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of space and generous handles to grip, but if the Multistrada 950 is equipped with suitcases, the stirrups are far behind, forcing the leg to stick to the suitcases and, if the passenger wears footwear without heel, you may have some difficulty keeping your foot in place.
For the rest, the Ducati Multistrada 950 in its S version is a motorcycle that claims its space in the mid-range of brands. At Borgo Panigale they have taken the most rational recipe combining passion with practicality and they have been left with a motorcycle that for an average user could border on perfection.
For those who like the adventurous look, apart from the equipment packs that Ducati has prepared, the Multistrada 950 S can also be equipped with steel spoke wheels. The price of these tires is 750 euros and the appearance gains a few integers, but in return the greater weight (+5 kg) of these makes the bike a little less manageable.
Prices for the Ducati Multistrada 950 are 14,390 euros for the normal version and 16,390 euros for the Multistrada 950 S. Among the competition we could classify the Italian as possibly the most expensive option, but at the same time the most equipped. Perhaps its most direct rival is the Triumph Tiger 800 whose range ranges from 11,000 euros to 15,000 euros.
For the rest, we could compare the Multistrada 950 and its S version with other trail bikes such as the BMW F 850 GS (11,950 euros), KTM 790 Adventure (from 12,390 euros), Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin (14,350 euros) or KTM 1090 Adventure (12,999 euros).
