It was an open secret and it has already been revealed. The new one Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin It has become a reality after being exclusively presented, revealing a completely renewed model that remains faithful to its two versions.
The second generation of modern Africa Twins arrives with a much more modern aesthetic, even more offroad features, more engine and a new technological section that includes gadgets that place it much closer to its competition.
Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin: even further
After having undergone a small update in 2018 with the introduction of the electronic throttle and small changes in addition to the premiere of the Adventure Sports version, for 2020 comes a complete renovation in the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin that includes changes in each and every one of its sections.
At Honda they have worked hard to make the Africa Twin an even more dynamic motorcycle and have achieved a product that is sharpened on an aesthetic level, but also lightens on the scale losing 5 kg, staying at 226 kg. What they have not finally included in this variation is a screen with height adjustment.
In addition to throwing a lower weight on the scale, a new motor has been implemented. The twin-cylinder structure is maintained in parallel with a 270º draft, but its displacement rises to 1,084 cc (previously 998 cc) to achieve 100 hp of power and 105 Nm of torque (94 hp and 99 Nm in the 2018 version), it also now complies with the Euro5 standard.
The diameter of the pistons has remained at 92 mm but the stroke has been extended to 81.5 mm, but even more important is that new materials and manufacturing processes have been used to achieve a propellant that corresponds to a diet of 2.5 5 kg on the total of 4 kg that the set loses.
The cylinder head is totally new as well as the larger injection bodies, variable exhaust valve and an ECU with specific programming and the injectors positioned differently. The scheme is maintained Unicam SOCH in the lead as on the brand's racing Motocross bikes.
As usual in the Honda offer there will continue to be the option to choose between manual gearbox or a dual clutch DCT with three modes of operation for gear changes without jumps and the possibility of manipulating it in manual (from the left hand wheel) or automatic.
Units equipped with the automatic transmission incorporate, as in the previous model, the function G for much more direct responses, minimizing clutch slippage, and a hill start assist.
Few changes to improve what was already good
The chassis of the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin is brand new. The steel beams of the semi-double cradle frame have been optimized to be narrower and straighter, the head tube is stiffer and the subframe (which is now bolted on) is 40mm narrower. The chassis is 1.8 kg lighter and the subframe 0.5 kg.
The suspensions maintain the same scheme as in the previous version with an inverted Showa fork with 45mm front axle bars and 230mm of travel and an adjustable shock absorber with 220mm of travel.
The brakes retain the dual 310 mm front discs bitten by four-piston calipers and radial anchoring, while the set of rims remains true to its offroad spirit with measurements of 21 inches in the front and 18 inches in the rear.
In terms of dimensions, the CRF1100L is somewhat shorter than the CRF1000L, but they maintain the same 1,575mm wheelbase. The 250 mm ground clearance and the ground clearance are also identical. 850/870 mm seat height adjustable in two positions.
IMU, anti-wheelie and new driving modes
One of the weakest points of the outgoing Africa Twin was its electronics section. Apart from the ABS and the regulation of the power modes (engine brake control, power delivery and traction control) there was not much else, and this they have wanted to change it completely in the house of the golden wing.
The dashboard needed a deep facelift and for 2020 a new next-generation screen is released. It's a 6.5 inch TFT touch monitor that brings together all the information, is customizable and can be manipulated with gloves. Includes Apple CarPlay and compatibility with Bluetooth phones to receive navigation instructions or make and receive calls. Cruise control will also be standard, one of the great absences of the current model.
For this new model Honda has incorporated a six-axis inertial measurement platform (Bosch MM7.10) which together with the well-known electronic throttle and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) make the Africa Twin a much more versatile and safer motorcycle.
The new CRF1100L Africa Twin features four levels of power, three levels of engine brake and seven levels of HSTC (apart from being able to disengage), but now they behave intelligently taking into account the speed of the wheels, camber and the weight transfers between both axes. Also debuts are a three-level switchable anti-wheelie control and rear wheel anti-lift.
The ABS begins to receive a new function of anti-lock in curve, taking into account the inclination and dosing the force sent to the brake pads to prevent blocking with the motorcycle tilted.
The driving modes will be a total of six: Tour, Urban, Gravel, Off-road, User 1 and User 2. Each of the presets will cover the general needs of any rider in a traditional use, leaving two customizable for an on-demand configuration, either for asphalt driving or on land.
On the price and availability of the new Honda CRF1100 Africa Twin we will still have to wait, but it is possible that it will hit the market in the first third of 2020.
