Although at times it seemed doomed, the World Superbike Championship is going to reach the decisive round alive, which will be held in two weeks at the Portuguese Estoril circuit. Scott Redding and Jonathan Rea keep hopes of being world champions, but the balance is clearly out of balance in favor of Kawasaki's.

With 59 points down and just 62 up for grabs, Redding would need a miracle never seen in Estoril. It practically only depends on Rea suffering an injury in training or in the first race that prevents him from continuing to compete. Something that obviously no one wants. If not, the Northern Irishman has the sixth crown in his hand.

It is enough for Rea to finish thirteenth in a long career to be champion

The first thing to say is that for the first time since 2016 the Superbike World Championship comes alive to the last round. That time it was Tom Sykes, still at Kawasaki, who arrived in Qatar in a very similar situation to that of Redding in Estoril. Needing a miracle that was not completed at that time: it was Rea's second wound.

The opening of the title to Estoril has contributed to the fact that the 2020 championship is so short due to the pandemic, as well as the problems that Rea had in the second long race at Magny-Cours, which prevented him from being on the podium when celebrating his sixth title it was practically up and running.

Going to math, Scott Redding is very clear about what he should do. You have to win all the races that are disputed in Estoril. Without the treble, the title is impossible for the Ducati rider. This is because in the event of a tie for points, Rea would always win by number of victories, so Redding cannot be second even in the Superpole Race.

But it is that, in addition to that, that it is already difficult, Redding needs Rea to only score two points or less in Estoril. That is to say, it practically needs three falls of the current champion. In the long races two points are given to the fourteenth and one to the fifteenth, while in the Superpole Race they add up to ninth position.

Taking into account that in the last three seasons Rea has only run out of points in two races- this year's inaugural at Phillip Island and the second at Brno in 2018 - it seems difficult for him to suddenly enter such a tremendous crisis as to not even score points in three races in a row. A serious injury in training would be the only thing possible.

Estoril will be a new circuit in the Superbike World Championship, and there Redding may have an advantage. While Rea has never competed there, the British rider is known from his time in the motorcycle world championships. Redding raced there five times, twice in 125cc and three in Moto2, although he never made it to the podium.
