It was the logical move and it has finally come about. BMW had to renew one of its two drivers for the 2021 season and the chosen one could not be other than Tom Sykes, both for career and track results. Sykes will continue to race the BMW S 1000 RR in the 2021 season.
BMW already announced during lockdown the signing of Michael van der Mark for the next two seasons. A move that rejuvenates his driver pair a bit, as Sykes is 35 and Eugene Laverty is 34. Van der Mark will arrive with 28 and a long career at YamahaBut Sykes will still be the sheriff at BMW.
Laverty is out of the official team after only half a disappointing year
Although it sounds far away Tom Sykes was the last rider to win the Superbike World Championship before Jonathan Rea's streak started. He did it with Kawasaki in 2013, but then they signed the Northern Irishman and began his initial streak, not without some battle with Sykes. But in the end the Englishman went to BMW.
Sykes has been running with the German brand for a season and a half, fighting with a project that is still far from the best, but in which he is managing to get gold. Has two superpoles and four podiums in 16 events in which he has participated with a BMW S 1000 RR That goes too far
"Tom has been a part of our WorldSBK team from the beginning and is an important pillar of this project. We are pleased to continue on a common path in 2021, a path that we started with the first tests in December 2018, "said Marc Bongers, director of BMW Motorrad Motorsport, in the statement.
The one who is left without a team is Laverty, whose results are being disappointing in his first and only season with BMW. He has only 16 points for Sykes' 47. What's more, Laverty has only been in the top ten once, his 10th place in the first at Portimao, while Sykes has only started there once, his 11th place in the final Jerez race.
"This gives us continuity, which is very important for the successful development of a project. We have already achieved a lot together, and the objective now is to definitively close the gap with the first. Tom's extensive knowledge of the BMW S 1000 RR and his opinions will play a key role in achieving this, "concluded Bongers.
Sykes became the rider with the most poles in Superbike history with a total of 50. His special feeling with the qualifying tire still allows him to shine on one lap. But it is already too common to see him rise very high and sink as the race progresses. BMW needs consistency and Sykes will continue to work on that.
