Chaz Davies has won his first race of the season at Montmeló. The Ducati rider made a good start and then imposed his race pace to win with authority, in a race in which Jonathan Rea was not at all competitive. He finished fourth and thanks to a final breakdown by Michael Ruben Rinaldi.
Luckily for him, Scott Redding has been even worse. He finished sixth, even behind Tom Sykes' BMW. Álvaro Bautista could not go out on track due to a mechanical problemSo the podium was completed by the Yamaha of Michael van der Mark and Garrett Gerloff, which was the big surprise of the day.
Redding couldn't take advantage of Rea's bad day and continues to lose points overall
In the Superpole Race, victory was taken by surprise by Michael van der Mark. The Yamaha one took advantage of the key moment of the race, which was when Álvaro Bautista fell while going first. Rea had to brake to avoid hitting him and van der Mark took a decisive lead lead.
Up for the second long race something went wrong with Bautista's Honda CBR1000RR-R during the formation lap, leaving him out of the race. It was added to the loss of Toprak Razgatlioglu. At the start, Michael van der Mark held the first position ahead of Michael Ruben Rinaldi, while Rea was fifth.
Redding was also passing Rea, leaving him in an unexpected sixth position. At the end of the first lap Rinaldi took the lead and Chaz Davies passed Garrett Gerloff, who was having a great weekend. The Ducati knew it was essential to stay ahead of Rea, especially for Redding, which was very aggressive.
Davies was leading 17 laps from the end. The Brit usually grows in the second halves of the race, so he looked like he was the favorite. And Rea passed Redding for fifth position and, above all, for the world championship. The second overall he was having a hard time even keeping up with the group of five in front.
Rinaldi went very long in a corner and that gave oxygen to Davies, who had a small gap on the Yamaha. Rea also took advantage of Rinaldi's collapse to put himself fourth and go for the podium. Gerloff was second, chasing DaviesBut van de Mark was not ready to give up.
Ten laps from the end van der Mark attacked Davies, but he responded. Contrary to what could be expected, Rea was losing positions and also lost place with Rinaldi. The tires were starting to be key. Redding was also on top of the Kawasaki rider. Battle for the title.
The race was very stabilized. Rhea was leaving Redding and the only slightest interest left was whether Gerloff was going to be able to hunt down van de Mark., although in principle the official Yamaha rider had a certain cushion. The big change came when Rinaldi began to pour oil from his motorcycle, there could be problems there and Rea was behind. The Italian ended up retiring.
Win for Chaz Davies, the first of the season, ahead of van der Mark, which endured the last attacks that Gerloff launched. Scott Redding even ended up being overtaken by Tom Sykes' BMW, sixth. Even in Jonathan Rea's worst race, he continues to lose points compared to the one who could already be champion at Magny-Cours.
