Vehicle manufacturers have realized that they have to expand their business and offer a more individual mobility offer and the niche that covers this need, in addition to motorcycles, are the electric scooters. Recently, for example, BMW Motorrad launched the X2City for 2,400 euros.
SEAT announced the sale of its electric scooter, the eXS, at the last Smart City Congress in Barcelona. Since December 2018 the brand has sold some 5,000 units. Now, take it one step further and it will start offering a shared service of electric scooters by the hand of UFO which complements SEAT's strategy of being the leader in urban micromobility within the Volkswagen Group.
UFO puts the platform, SEAT the scooters
SEAT is going to put 530 units of its eXS on the streets of Madrid, a Personal Mobility Vehicle (VMP) born of an agreement with Segway. XMOBA Ventures, an independent SEAT company that tests, implements and invests in different forms of mobility, has reached an agreement with UFO so that users of the Spanish capital can use their two-wheelers.
To qualify for this service, you must download the UFO application on your phone and register. Once inside, a map will appear showing the available electric scooters. To reserve one you have to scan a QR code that appears on the vehicle.
The cost of unlocking the vehicle is one euro and each minute of use costs 0, 15 euros. The payment is made automatically through the application since during the registration you have to enter a card number.
To park them, they must be left in the spaces reserved for motorcycles and bicycles, in the general parking band of the road or on the sidewalks following the regulations of the city, which in the case of Madrid is glued to the road, provided that the sidewalk is greater than three meters and does not disturb pedestrians.
The SEAT eXS is an electric scooter that uses the platform of the Segway ES2. It has two 8-inch wheels and the front end has damping. Its maximum speed is up to 25 km / h. It belongs to the VMP B category where there are vehicles with speeds greater than 20 km / h and a maximum of 30 km / h with a maximum mass of 50 kg and dimensions below 0.8 meters wide, 2.1 meters high. and 1, 9 meters long.
It weighs 12.5 kg and has a 187 Wh lithium-ion battery so it has a range of approximately 25 km. UFO allows users to take their scooters home at night to recharge them (and even pays them for it). In such a case, the recharging time to bring the battery to 100% is 3.5 hours.
This commercial strategy is an alliance that it will be good for both parties. On the one hand, UFO is interested in working with SEAT because they want to expand to other European cities and, on the part of SEAT, through XMOBA, they will be able to analyze the behavior data of their users' mobility, which will facilitate them have information about their customs.
