When Tito Rabat and the Avintia team reached a renewal agreement by surprise a week ago, it was announced that the Spanish rider would have factory equipment for the 2020 season. Well, it seems that this possibility has been frustrated at the last minute.. And is that Ducati has confirmed that there will only be four Desmosedici GP20s on the grid Next year.
This has been confirmed by Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati's sporting director, who explained that in addition to the official team bikes, the two Pramac will also be GP20. But no more, contradicting what was announced by the Avintia team a few weeks ago. In this way the relationship between both parties is further strained.
Avintia had announced that Rabat would have official material
"We are very happy to have reached an agreement with Pramac Racing to provide them with two GP20s next season. It will be the first time for Ducati. This effort will help us gather more information and thus improve the development process for better results. It will also create extra motivation among our drivers, "explained Ciabatti.
And it is indeed the first time that Ducati put four black-legged motorcycles on the track. This year Pecco Bagnaia is racing at the Pramac with the 2018 bike, but by contract he had to have the GP20 in 2020. And the newly renovated Jack Miller logically made it a condition that he also have, as in 2019, the most advanced Ducati motorcycle.
As for the situation with the Avintia, the Ducati sporting director was more concise. Paolo Ciabatti limited himself to indicating about them that the Real Avintia team has a contract with Ducati Corse for the years 2019 and 2020. We will deliver the 2019 bikes to Avintia next year, and those aren't bad bikes".
In the Avintia team's plans was to get at least a GP20 to put in the hands of Tito Rabat in the 2020 season. With official technicians included, the idea was to have a successful season in order to have a better negotiating position at the end of 2020, when, as Ciabatti says, his contract with Ducati ends.
The Avintia is not unaware that a powerful brand like Suzuki does not have a satellite team, while Ducati currently has two. It would be a step forward for the only Spanish team on the grid be able to become Suzuki's satellite squad ahead of the following MotoGP seasons.
Also, Dorna's plans are pretty clear. In 2022 they want there to be 24 motorcycles on the track, four for each brand, two officers and two satellites. Currently, there are two brands without satellite equipment, Suzuki and Aprilia, while there is one with two satellites, Ducati. It is clear that to survive the Avintia will have to address the change sooner rather than later.
