Before many of the readers here present were not even born, in 1981 the first Suzuki katana it destroyed the standards of the time to become a motorcycle that today is a classic model of the most coveted among the oldies.
Today has just become a mark in history with the presentation of the new Suzuki GSX-S1000S Katana, a model that in 2019 will become the benchmark for retro-modern motorcycles with admirable aesthetics, a high-altitude bike part and first-rate electronics.

Drinking the waters of the original model, the Hamamatsu developers have created a model whose image is unmistakably inspired by the original Katana and which dazzled us last year at EICMA 2017 when it was presented as a standalone prototype by the Italian division of Suzuki.
That Katana 3.0 Concept broke a few necks as a probe balloon and Suzuki decided to take the step to materialize what they have just presented today. A sporty cut body by the standards of the '80s, a name that commands respect and a legendary logo recovered by the brand form a set that finally places Suzuki among the best, serving a market segment that has hitherto been turned away.
The angular bodywork is punctuated by a low fairing with that unmistakable lower lip under a square headlight with LED technology and a small smoked dome. The tank full of ribs and with a certain 'Blade Runner' air cubes only 12 liters, together with the square-shaped tail and a sharp LED pilot with the license plate holder anchored to the swingarm complete the aesthetics of a model that will go down in the books of history..
Under this classic appearance hides a set already well known this XXI century. The engine used is a water-cooled 999 cubic centimeter inline four cylinder derived from the GSX-R1000 from 2005 to 2008 that ends in a specific silencer for this model finished in black. Engine figures are 150 hp and 108 Nm of torque.
The electronics The Suzuki GSX-S1000S Katana's features include three traction control modes, Low RPM Assist for easy starting, Easy Start System and a fully digital white graphics on black LCD dashboard for easy reading.
The chassis is also borrowed from the cycle part used in the Suzuki GSX-S1000 with an aluminum double-beam frame, massive swingarm made of the same material taken from the 2016 GSX-R1000, and sporty cut suspensions with a 43mm KYB upside-down fork adjustable front and adjustable monoshock at the rear. The triple double spoke wheels are new to accommodate the retro aesthetic of the model.
Ergonomics have been studied to offer a good compromise between comfort and fun. The seat is located at 825 millimeters off the ground, suitable for all audiences, which together with a wide and relatively high handlebar achieves a fairly upright posture that if we let ourselves fall on the tank it becomes successful to attack the sections of curves.
The braking equipment is also the best material used in the Hamamatsu range of motorcycles with a 310mm front double disc bit off by trails. Brembo monobloc radial attachment calipers with four pistons equal to those of the current Suzuki GSX-R1000. The ABS system is signed by Bosch and weighs only 640 grams.
As a curiosity, the wheels that equip the Suzuki GSX-S1000S Katana as standard are not just any wheels. The Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 factory assembled are specially developed for the Katana, they have a specific compound and a semi-slick aesthetic that is also their own.
Although it could have been something more than a body change, the Suzuki GSX-S1000S Katana is ready to help Suzuki to leave that environment of lethargy in which the brand was mired. We only need to know the price and availability to start to do the math.
