It has now been just over a year since the third generation Multistrada was presented at the Milan Motor Show 2014. Since then we have had an infinite desire to test it to see if the generational change was capable of improving a Multistrada 1200 which was already very, very good.
With the great asset of the new variable valve timing engine (DVT - Ducati Variable Timing) the Multistrada contained a sublime technological section. But, to curl the curl even more, we have put ourselves at the controls of the most special yet Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. A motorcycle that, as we said in its presentation, is highly desirable.

The bodywork that dresses this Multistrada is more ready-to-wear than ever and although the main features are already known to us, it has a much more modern and fitted look. Now the pieces flow and integrate with each other. Peak frontal is now slightly less prominent and straighter, at the same time that it has larger air inlets for cooling.
On these, we come across a set of led lights that form its main hallmark for those who look straight at this penetrating-looking Italian. The view is slightly reduced and the full led scheme takes up less space but forms a more dynamic horizontal line. On this S version in particular is also equipped with the curved lighting system.
The handguards are now closed, are joined on the outside to the tips of the handlebar through a low area that simulates aluminum, to improve the impression of quality and avoid vibrations in motion. Inside them are the led turn signals.
A little higher up the manually adjustable dome has also changed and is now a little wider and has a more rounded shape for increase aerodynamic protection.
The tank in the upper lateral area is a little more voluminous to help reinforce the protection of the legs and descends in its final part to narrow and make a more compact set in the arch of the legs to better reach the ground on a seat that is also new. Now it forms a larger curve and is adjustable in two positions (825 and 845 millimeters in height).
If we continue going a little further back, first we will see a new structure of the handles for the passenger with more elaborate shapes and underneath it, at the end, a very personal led rear light in the shape of "fangs" and that make the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S easily identifiable.

The propeller, how could it be otherwise coming from Borgo Panigale, is a large 1,198 twin cylinder, 4 cubic centimeters not only produces 160 hp at 9,500 rpm and 136 Nm at 7,500, but also delivers them in an unknown way to date thanks to its system DVT (Ducati Variable Timing).
This new system of variable distribution applied for the first time on a production motorcycle, it acts on the camshafts such as the intake camshafts to optimize valve timing based on engine revolutions, engine temperature, the demands of the electronic throttle, the position of the crankshaft and the camshaft.
This is achieved by rotating the camshafts through gyros controlled by oil pressure and controlled by sensors in the cylinder heads that allow the engine to perform optimally over a much wider rev range.
In addition to getting more power and torque for longer, it also does so with improper running finesse on these large twin-cylinder engines and with more contained emissions to overcome Euro 4. But with this video you will understand it better:
In fact it is even more difficult if the compression is so high (12, 5: 1) and the consequences are coughs and jerks at low revs, as still happened to the outgoing model despite having already received elements such as the anti-detonation sensor, the secondary gas lines or the double spark plug (Dual Spark). Now all that is a thing of the past.
The 2-1-2 exhaust system Although it has a structure similar to the previous model, it has also been redesigned to comply with Euro 4 regulations.

One of the new features of the outgoing Multistrada was the driving modes, and in this new Ducati Multistrada 1200 S has gone one step further and it is done in a more interactive and visual way with the driver.
This can be done thanks to the new intelligent color full digital dashboard and a button on the left pineapple. From there we can select between the four different preconfigured driving modes (Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro) with the left thumb.
Each of them has a specific setting both the engine and the cycle part. On the one hand, the propeller will deliver 160 horses (Sport and Touring) or 100 (Urban and Enduro), in each case with a different response, anti-wheelie with more or less joy and a more or less intrusive ABS and traction control.
And on the other hand, within the configuration possibilities, this Ducati Multistrada 1200 S has as standard with the DSS (Ducati Skyhook System). This set of semi-active suspensions is made up of hardware and software that was already released by its predecessor but which is now improved to offer better performance.
Both the fork and the shock absorber are controlled by a control unit that adjusts their settings almost in real time after analyzing the information produced by all the motorcycle's sensors. With this information, the DSS is able to interpret the type of driving we are doing, after having pre-configured with the four driving modes, and change suspension settings to suit the conditions.
We can also choose the type of preload very quickly, whether we travel alone, with a companion, alone with luggage or with a companion and luggage.
Own control panel It is a cucada. In each of the driving modes it also changes to offer us different information and also includes a light sensor to go from a white background to a black background so as not to dazzle us when it gets dark or we enter a tunnel.
Inside the already known Ducati Safety Pack We come across some things that have changed for this generation. In addition to the usual ABS, a module is included Bosch 9ME with curve tilt sensor capable of detecting the degrees of inclination and prevents the wheel from locking if we are braking with the motorcycle lying down.
This system also equips an anti-wheelie that prevents front wheel lift accelerating apart from the anti-inverter for when we abuse the front brake that the previous version already had. All these measures not only increase the performance of the motorcycle in sporty riding, but are also an active safety system that will keep all types of users safe.
There are so many things to say about this bike that I lack space … We'd better put the theory aside, which is fine for today.
