In 1976 BMW presented the first motorcycle in the world that was manufactured in large series and that had an integral fairing, fixed to the frame and designed in a wind tunnel. That motorcycle was called BMW R 100 RS and it marked a before and after in the world of sports motorcycles as it combined riding qualities without giving up sports driving. Since then, the BMW RS family has been one of the pampered girls in the brand. Suffice it to say that the first BMW with a four-valve engine was the BMW R 1100 RS in the early 1990s. Although later the model as such left the catalog, it now returns with a new engine and some more refinements than its predecessor.

The engine that we find in this BMW R 1200 RS It is the same as the BMW R 1200 GS, Adventure, RT and BMW R 1200 R that has also been presented at the Intermot in Cologne and about which we will talk shortly. This twin cylinder in boxer configuration and with mixed air-liquid cooling delivers a power of 125 hp at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 6,500 revolutions. The engine torque in this case is a little higher than the other versions to gain handling at low revs. The exhaust setup is a 2-in-1 and ends in an upward sloping muffler. The position of the radiator and the air inlet for the airbox box are located in the front area, thus achieving a slimmer silhouette.

As standard we find ABS and ASC that allows you to choose between two riding modes, Rain and Road that allow you to adapt the bike to the rider's needs. These modes are complemented by the optional Dynamic Traction Control module in the Pro version. This system adds two more modes to the configuration possibilities called Dynamic and User. The latter being the one that allows you to freely configure the traction control or even the response of the engine to the accelerator.

In the chassis and cycle part section, we find a new double-girder chassis made of steel tubes that uses the engine as a self-supporting element. Ahead the fork abandons the telelever system in favor of a inverted telescopic fork. Behind we find an old friend, the paralever EVO. The shapes of this new BMW R 1200 RS are inspired by the aesthetics of the BMW S 1000 RR.

We have already said that the system will be in option Dynamic ESA, which allows the electronic regulation of the suspension and that it adapts automatically to any change in the road and the driver's maneuvers. On the dashboard we find a TFT display in which there are numerous additional information to the analog speedometer that presides over the dashboard. On the display we can see the information offered by the on-board computer that is included as standard.

Of course this information can be viewed through three different modes. But if this is not enough, you can choose the Pro module which offers many more options. Among the optional equipment offered by BMW for this motorcycle is the Keyless system that allows you to lock or unlock the handle, open the fuel tank cap and start the engine without the need for a physical key.

The brakes used by the BMW R 1200 RS we have already said that they come with ABS as standard. At the front it uses 320mm diameter discs with four-piston calipers. Behind the disc is 276 mm in diameter and the caliper is double piston. The wheels are made of alloy and measure 17 inches in diameter. At the front they are shod with a 120/70 ZR 17 tire and at the rear with 180/55 ZR 17.

The design of the BMW R 1200 RS it combines the touring qualities of the family it represents with the agility of a boxer-powered sports car. Because BMW RSs were always considered as very versatile motorcycles that were worth the same to make a long trip as to go out for a weekend to curve. With this idea in mind, the semi-fairing was designed with the sunken front and the tail with a very stylized silhouette and rising line. Thus, a wedge shape is achieved that reminds us of the sporting qualities of the motorcycle.
