Today we have a somewhat special event in Motorpasión Moto. It is not due to the fact that it is a electric scooter since we have brought you to these same pages a couple of them, but because we are talking about a model manufactured entirely in the Canary Islands and that this time one of our readers has tested, specifically Antonio Hernandez. Has climbed to the Tohqi ML and he has told us his experience.

But before we echo his words and convey what he felt on the back of this new electric scooter, let's know a little more about his features since it has some peculiarity that we have not seen in other models.

Tohqi ML, characteristics and curiosities

Tohqi ML
Tohqi ML

The Tohqi ML It is a scooter designed for almost completely urban use. It is powered by a brushless six-phase permanent magnet electric motor located on the rear wheel. It has a total power of 3 kW and it delivers a torque of 110 Nm which allows it a maximum speed of about 60 km / h (45 km / h for the moped version).

A double cradle chassis made of steel is in charge of giving rigidity to the whole assembly that on the scale throws a weight of 92 kilos, quite reduced. The batteries located in the lower part are of the LiFePO4 type with a maximum capacity of 2.3 kWh. The autonomy is approximately 70 km and the recharge is completed in four or five hours in any 220 V outlet. The estimated duration of the batteries is about 2,000 full charge cycles that in kilometers would be about 120,000 kilometers. An atrocity.

The cycle part It is very simple: front hydraulic telescopic fork, double rear shock absorber and some small 10 inch wheels with narrow 90/90 tires. We already know that the fight against rolling resistance is fierce in these vehicles.

What is not so simple are the brakes since, against all odds, it has 180mm double disc brake each bitten on both trains by double-piston calipers. With these brakes, as we will see, the speed reductions are proportional to the MotoGP carbon discs.

Tohqi ML, the vision of Antonio Hernández

Now and as we said, we leave the word to our reader Antonio Hernandez and let him be the one to tell us what has caught his attention, liked or disliked the Tohqi ML while he made a small contact. Go ahead that to be the first time you write a test of a motorcycle, he has done really well and you have noticed almost all the important points.

We leave you with him:

The first thing that catches the attention of the Tohqi ML, is his size. It's really compact and on top of that with the 46-liter Shad trunk the unit had mounted, it looked even smaller. The wheels resemble those of a transport wheelbarrow. Even so, It was not difficult for me to find myself comfortable and my height is 1.87 (although the image from the outside looked too similar to that of a famous motorized gorilla that we saw in our childhood on TV).

Once at the controls of the motorcycle, we appreciate that it is a really spartan vehicle. Plastic materials are very economical in appearance and although they fulfill their mission without question, they denote the origin of their components. I imagine this will be decisive in how the bike ages.

In any case, there are things that stand out because they stand out among the set and because they are not common in motorcycles in this segment (I am referring to urban scooters), such as the two hydraulic brake pumps, with metal hoses on both trains. This together with the disc brakes, guarantee a braking well above the performance of the bike, although I will comment on this later. The scorecardIt is made up of a speedometer with a total kilometer counter and a battery charge indicator.

The moment of start the march is full of doubts for someone used to loud and vibrant motorcycles, as is my case. Here there is total and absolute silence, nothing moves. So giving the first "gasp" is almost a leap of faith.

The Tohqi ML It has a vigorous start that almost surprises the first few times (N. A. R.: acceleration from 0 to 45 km / h is 6, 9 seconds). In the first meters accelerate consistently and continuously, which guarantees that you will not be fed by traffic when you exit the first at a traffic light.

The bike is agile. With its compact size, small diameter wheels and low center of gravity due to the arrangement of the electric cells, it snakes between cars like a small fish in an aquarium and the stillness that surrounds it further contributes to that elusive feeling.

Here is one of the great dangers of these vehicles: his silence. I advise you to learn well where the horn button is because it is going to have to be used many times, unfortunately. During my test, I couldn't help but give a good scare to two ladies who threw themselves into a crosswalk without looking. Despite the fact that I had seen them and stopped without major problem, they did not notice me until they passed right in front of the bike.

Throttle response is instantaneous, practically a switch. Although during some phases of the test it was difficult to find that minimum gas point to circulate continuously, without accelerating or braking. There was a small power vacuum.

Special mention deserve the brakes. They really are powerful for the requirements of this bike. The front is dosable although it has a slightly spongy touch. Butt is a weapon of mass destructionRough, direct and with a bite that made the rear wheel skid, at practically any hint of operating it.

The factory comments that Unlimited model is equivalent to 125. In my opinion this is somewhat optimistic. I am no longer talking about comparing it with a KTM Duke 125, whose performance is far from any other motorcycle in that sector, but about comparing it with any 125 of custom cut and Japanese origin.

The Tohqi MLIt accelerates well from 0 to 60km / h, but once this point is reached, gaining speed depends more on the terrain than on the bike. At the time of testing, the bike had been in use for almost two days without recharging, but the battery indicator was still in the green zone. This makes me think that if it goes down from this area, the benefits will drop somewhat more.

Returning to the comparison with a 125, any combustion motorcycle of this displacement is capable of maintaining decent cruises on the highway, without becoming something to be avoided by other drivers. With the Tohqi ML I do not see it so clearly and less in the Canary Islands, where the orography turns many highways into slides (N. D. R.: the factories guarantee that it is able to overcome slopes of 20%). I sincerely believe that your place is the city and the more downtown and more congested, the better. In addition, its fast full charge cycle, of just four hours, makes it an efficient vehicle for the day-to-day life of an inveterate urbanite.

Of the price I cannot speak much, since they only told me, as an indication that it could be "around € 3000" and I do not know how the issue of government aid for these vehicles is right now (N. A. R.: the cost is € 2,600 excluding tax. Being manufactured in the Canary Islands, we do not know this value).

Something very positive that it does have, is that in case of failure of any of the cells storage, these are insulated and can be changed independently, without having to change the entire battery. The cost of a cell is about € 20 and the exchange operation is very simple.

Like everything in life, as a whim it will be somewhat expensive but if it is put to proper use for a while, it will probably be a profitable investment.

And nothing else, up to here the particular vision that it has given us Antonio Hernandez. From Motorpasión Moto we congratulate you on the test and we appreciate that he has given us the material to be able to do it for all of you. Finally, we leave you with a small video and the technical sheet of the Tohqi ML.
