When the Ducati Hypermotard in 2005 it quickly became a best seller (or so they say at Ducati). But as this is a renew or die, in 2013 we will have at our disposal the new Ducati Hypermotard. Now they come with the new Ducati Testastretta 11º 821 cc engine and we can also enjoy what Ducati calls the “cross-over” between motard and touring with the Ducati Hyperstrada. Let's take a look at them.

Ducati Testastretta 821 cc 11th engine

The second evolution of the Ducati Testastretta 11th engine now has 821 cc and is capable of giving 110 hp at 9,250 rpm, with a torque of 9.1 kgm at 7,750 rpm with authentic Ducati character. The internal dimensions of this 821cc engine are 88mm bore by 67.5mm stroke. Compression is 12.8 to 1 and uses a four-valve desmodromic cylinder head in addition to liquid cooling. This cooling is supported by a high-efficiency radiator with a double electro-fan. The feeding depends on two injection bodies with a diameter of 52 mm.

As is logical, this engine uses many known solutions in the Ducati 1199 Panigale engine, such as the fresh air intake valve in the first stage of the exhaust, which improves the combustion of hydrocarbons to reduce polluting emissions.

Clutch is cable actuated, but this uses a servo-mechanism system that compresses or decompresses the discs depending on which direction the force comes from, or from the motor or gearbox. This achieves a sliding that smoothes the response of the rear wheel in radical reductions or accelerations.

Exhaust gases run through 50mm diameter tubes and it is configured as a 2-in-1 with a single silencer finished in black with a stainless steel end cap. Perhaps the best data of all this is that this engine you only need to pass through the workshop every 30,000 km to make the most important revisions.

Electronics, that great friend to all

This gem of a motor incorporates all the electronics that we know in other models such as the Ducati 1199 Panigale, but in a version adapted to the requirements of the new Hypermotard family. The first is the Ride-by-wire system, which makes it possible to "filter" what the pilot does with his fist from what the engine actually does. This is complemented by what Ducati calls the Ducati Safety Pack, which incorporates a three-level ABS, an 8-level Traction Control (DTC) and the three selectable steering levels across the range.

In the Ducati Hypermotard and Hyperstrada we find three modes called Sport, Touring and Urban. Sport mode allows the engine to deliver the 100 110 hp it is capable of with virtually immediate throttle response. This mode reduces traction control intervention and uses the first level of ABS.

The Touring mode also allows to deliver the 110 hp, but with an intermediate response to the grip. It increases the traction control a little more than the previous mode and the ABS is in second position.

Finally Urban mode limits power to 75 hp, is the option that most filters the movements of the accelerator, increases traction control even more and keeps the ABS in its second position.

In the Ducati Hypermotard SP The first two modes, which are called Race and Sport use the same settings as in Urban and Touring modes. Being the third mode, called Wet, which in addition to cutting power to 75 HP, filtering the response of the gas and maximizing traction control, places the ABS at level 3, the maximum available.

Combined with this electronics is the ABS system, signed by Bosch and that acts on Brembo brakes. It uses a pair of 320mm diameter discs at the front and a single 245mm diameter disc at the rear. The forwards are bitten by Monobloc M4-32 tweezers radial anchor actuated by a radial Brembo pump with adjustable lever in four positions. Five if we talk about the SP version.

New design, to follow the familiar line

What would be of Ducati without its steel tube Trellis chassis? Let them tell a certain Valentino Rossi. In the Ducati Hypermotard and Hyperstrada we find the well-known Trellis chassis made of steel tubes painted red and that uses the engine as a structural part of it. Although here we find some current details such as the sub chassis made of cast iron and an intermediate section made of polymers that I would like to see in more detail to see what it is like.

The wheelbase is 1,500 mm and the handlebar rotates 70º from lock to lock, which promises to be able to rotate in a fairly small space. The seats of the three models are not exactly low, going from the 890 mm of the Ducati Hypermotard SP (which has a 20 mm lowered seat as an option). Going through the 870 mm of the Ducati Hypermotard and the 850 mm of the Ducati Hyperstrada. All have a 16-liter tank, 3, 6 more than the previous version. This increases the autonomy of the motorcycle, but it has been achieved in such a way that the narrow “waist” that we already knew is not lost.
