Dakar 2012 preview: All the info about Marc Coma's KTM 450 Rally

On the first of January of this close 2012 the raid of raids begins, the Dakar 2012. We review with you the route of this tough test and We are preparing the KTM 450 Rally that Marc Coma will drive. Successor to that KTM 690 Rally that won the Dakar twice and the Cross Country World Rally Championship four times. This KTM 450 Rally debuted a year ago at the Dakar and was the first winner of this event with engines limited to 450cc.

More than 450 verified vehicles will participate in this Dakar 2012 that will see the starting flag lowered in the city Mar Del Plata in Argentina and his journey will end in Lima Peru. This year the route is unprecedented, including Peru as a part of the competition that will be presumed decisive due to the unknown and the technical nature of its orography. This and new features in the regulations will be the keys to this Dakar 2012.

Not without its youthful faults, this KTM 450 Rally has been polishing itself more and more since last year. Much work has been done for engine reliability 449cc four-stroke single cylinder as the new 2012 Dakar regulations will penalize the change of engines. Until now the rule allowed two engines to be changed without receiving a penalty and this year it is sanctioned from the first change.

In this way the first engine change is sanctioned with 15 minutes, the second change with 45 minutes and the successive ones with 120 minutes. We will have to count on the strategy factor this year as it may be the case that it is worse to extend the useful life of an engine that may break down at a decisive stage than to accept the penalties for the first propeller changes. In the case of the KTM 450 Rally, the engine has been fixed to the lower part of the chassis by means of two metal arms that will facilitate disassembly in the event of a change.

Is a bulky but agile bike and the weight has been reduced taking as reference its older sister of 690cc. They installed three fuel tanks, two front and one central, which distributed add a capacity of 35 liters of fuel. At the bottom of the motorcycle and as an obligation of the regulations, another two-liter tank is enabled, but with drinking water to hydrate the rider in case of needing assistance. Marc Coma starts as a favorite with this KTM 450 Rally along with fellow KTM rider Cyril Despres.
