Voucher, you have already decided that this motorcycle you've seen a zillion times to make sure it's in good shape it will be your next motorcycle. You've even brought an “expert” friend to see it to make sure it doesn't have any mechanical flaws that you might have missed. You have agreed a price with the current owner, neither for you nor for him, something reasonable. But you have the problem of going through the whole process to put it in your name. The easy option would be to put everything in the hands of a consultancy, who know how to do it very well and quickly, but the price has just thrown your forecast on the ground. So you have to do the paperwork yourself.

I am not an advisor or lawyer You know all the twists and turns to put that precious motorcycle in your name, but since I've done it a few times, I'm going to try to explain the steps to buy a second hand motorcycle without problems. The first thing to do is check that the motorcycle in question has all the documentation in order, this means that in addition to the numbering on the chassis of the circulation permit coinciding with that of the motorcycle; the owner is the same one who sells you the motorcycle, and the ITV is up to date.

This last look seems silly, but you wouldn't be the first to show up on your city's ITV with a motorcycle that does not pass it for a silly thing, a light fails, the wheels are not of the approved size or the sound of that beautiful exhaust far exceeds the maximum allowed. At that moment your face is stupid, for not having made sure that everything was in order before getting into the dreaded ITV. On many occasions, the ITV issue is usually a point to be negotiated.

The next step is to check that the taxes are up to date, the famous "town hall badge" that many spend to pay as if it were not with them. Here it is only necessary to go to the municipality of origin of the vehicle and hope that only the last tax is pending payment, because if not They can claim you up to the last five years.

In the Valencian Community it is mandatory to present a purchase-sale contract in hacienda and pay the transfer rights of the holder. Here there are many who put the exact price that comes out of the official scale so as not to pay a cent more than is strictly necessary. This procedure in Alicante is usually an hour or an hour and a half at the Ministry of Finance, and as long as you carry all the papers that they ask for in order,

  • DNI of the seller and the buyer
  • copy of the Technical Data Sheet and Vehicle Circulation Permit
  • original and copy of the purchase-sale contract
  • the last municipal tax paid
  • the form of entry of the fees in the bank (paid of course)

The next step is to go to traffic so that the vehicle finally appears in your name. A few years ago the traffic forms were guarded along with the Dead Sea manuscripts, because you needed to lose mid-morning in line to get that precious piece of paper. Currently you can download it from the internet, fill them out and print them in no time. So you only have to go to queue for a couple of hours to pay the fees and then present the documentation at the window. In this case you have to present:

  • The datasheet
  • the Vehicle Circulation Permit
  • your ID
  • the last municipal tax paid
  • the contract that says the bike was yours a while ago

With all these paperwork, the new circulation permit finally comes out with your name next to the registration of your new acquisition. At this point you may find that the vehicle has a pending fine or some domain restriction due to an embargo or similar. But there is only one way to avoid it and that is by previously going with your license plate number to request a report where they tell you who it is in and if they have any problem transferring it. In total you may have spent a few seven euros of the report and others fifty euros of the transfer to your name. In addition, the part that is kept, which is 4% of the value that they estimate of the vehicle (hence their estimate and what you put in the contract agree to the penny).

This that said like this seems like a world, it is not so complicated, you just have to be meticulous and follow the instructions step by step that they give you in the DGT or in the Treasury. Although the first time you go lost and helpless in front of the administration, it is very easy to get your new acquisition to be yours by fulfilling the administrative requirements. Once this procedure has been successfully achieved, you dare to do almost any other procedure, since the windows or the queues of official bodies no longer scare you so much.
