Exactly a month ago our colleague Héctor Ares took advantage of the Ducati Tour visit to his city to make contact with the Ducati 848 and the Ducati Monster 696. He had left in the inkwell his intention to test the Ducati GT1000.
As after almost a year you will begin to know me, and I always bring you some rare motorcycle to try, I took advantage of the fact that Ducati Tour He came this weekend to Gijón to do a few kilometers with a few models, led by Pablo Silvan and the dealer Jano motorcycles.
And indeed, one of the models that I could taste was the model GT1000, a small tribute to the retro Ducati models of the 70s. The whole bike evokes us to those years: its front fender, the side covers, the slim tank with indentations for the legs, etc. And of course the retro ducati logo in the tank and on the back of the seat.
But don't be fooled by the shape of the bike. With it you can go very fast, more than you expect for a motorcycle of these characteristics. Inside, the 992 cc twin produces 92 horses, which together with the 182 kg empty promises sensations worthy of a sportier motorcycle.
But hey, let's stop commenting on the data, since what really matters to you is its behavior. As you sit on it, you notice that the posture is very comfortable, with a soft seat and a well-placed handlebar, nothing to do with the Monster stance to which the Italian brand has accustomed us.
With the engine idling, the sound is very light, while hardly any vibrations leak into the seat or hands. Already in the first meters you realize that everything in it runs smoothly. The engine turns completely round, and unless you turn on the gas very forcefully at low revs, you will barely notice the piston of the engine.
As you accelerate, the engine feels completely flat on its power delivery. No potholes, no gaps … it is perfect for road or city routing, as the clutch, even when dry, is very soft and easy to operate.
It is not a motorcycle to go knife but yes that allows to maintain happy rhythms. Entering the curve you can see that you have to apply a little more force, but compared to other motorcycles with similar characteristics, this one looks like a competition. As for brakes, they seemed perfect for this bike, in a time when if you don't have calipers and a radial pump, you are nobody.
The only buts I could get out of the bike are that the dashboard vibrates a bit and the gear stick looks like is not in place. The first thing caught my attention because it gave the sensation that the needles were vibrating like in old motorcycles, a detail that is still curious.
The gear lever theme is striking considering the quality of the rest of the bike, where everything is in its place. It may also be that my 45 foot has not found the ideal position. Everything is possible.
It was time to change motorcycles, and the Monster 1100 S he looked at me with little eyes.
To be continue…
